The Syrian Women's Network consists of women activists, journalists, professionals and academics, as well as a few male members. Its charter was adopted at a conference hosted by Women's Democracy Network in Doha, Qatar in January 2013, in coordination with the US State Department's Office of Global Women’s Issues. It was formally established in Cairo in May 2013.

Aims

The Network's goal is creating more cooperation between women's activists and organisations. The network also pushes to integrate gender sensitive approaches in peacebuilding processes, transitional justice mechanisms and committees of national reconciliation.

Description of activities

The Network is an active contributor of stories about the daily life of women in Syria to the online platform 'Women of Syria'. In January 2014 it launched a campaign from Geneva, raising awareness of political prisoners in Syria held by the regime or by extremists, and calling for their release.
