Learning SessionsThe Mennonite Central Committee Bangladesh (MCC) works towards an effective community built upon divine love, relief, growth and peace. It was established in 1970. Over a long period, MCCB has introduced a number of territorial guidance and peace-related programmes to ensure peacekeeping.

MCCB runs its projects on the basis of both the folk oriented history of Bangladesh and knowledge from international peacebuilding organisations. It believes that this approach will embed peace in the roots of society.

As part of its peacebuilding work, MCCB aims to combine peace consciousness and tools to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of its development projects. MCCB has already initiated a programme especially for territorial sector to cover conflict and violence.

MCCB has developed its learning module to cover areas such as conflict reformation, peace in the family, peace education and its necessity within different sectors. To promote peace in Bangladesh, MCCB introduced ‘Payra’, which promotes peace in Bangladesh through education and research.

Other activities include teaching conflict resolution skills and peacebuilding strategies, encouraging people to choose peace over violence, addressing systemic injustices that can lead to violence, facilitating interfaith dialogue and relationship-building across cultural, racial and ethnic divides, building resilience and respond to psychological needs through trauma healing, and providing educational advocacy resources about peace.

Learning Sessions

PAYRA’s learning sessions emerged from Bangladeshi nationals’ experience doing on the-ground development work combined with international education and learning. The 3 to 5 day “Training of Trainer” sessions develop peace building skills, attitudes and concepts that explore ways to transform personal challenges, community conflict and the overall development of Bangladesh.

All of our Adult Participatory Learning Sessions are facilitated in Bengali, with Bengali materials. They draw from the rich local wisdom and cultural traditions of the peoples in Bangladesh—including the use of drama, song, multimedia, role plays and learning activities. Learning Sessions currently include:

  • Peace Foundations;
  • Conflict Transformation;
  • Peace Education Facilitation skills;
  • Family Relationships Training;
  • Creating a just society by valuing diversity;
  • Trauma Awareness for the Peacebuilder.

Expanding Resources

Participating organizations will also have access to the following facilities:

  • Membership in a Peace Builders network
  • Use of an expanding Resource Centre carrying peace building materials in Bangla and English
  • Links with faculty members from academic institutions
  • When appropriate, PAYRA staff will help participating organizations to analyze their local situation and plan locally relevant interventions.
