Assistance for Health, Education and Development (AHEAD)

AHEAD contributes to the improvement of public health, social development, civil society development and education standards in Afghanistan.

A group of energetic, experienced and comparatively young social health workers established Assistance for Health, Education and Development (AHEAD) in 2008. AHEAD aims to contribute to the improvement of public health, social development, civil society development and education standards.

The long term vision of AHEAD is the realisation and development of public health, education, community development and a vibrant and vital civil society in Afghanistan where the interest, concerns and dignity of the civilians are taken seriously and more people have access to resources. AHEAD’s mission is to “contribute to improve the quality of Afghan families’ life through provision and distribution of quality health, education services, awareness, community development, civil society development, capacity building and research.”

Recent projects of AHEAD include:

  • IDP monitoring and profiling: AHEAD monitors internally displaced people (IDPs) in four northeastern Afghan provinces (Badakhshan, Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar) and creates a profile on IDPs in the region including information about the number of people, where they are, the reasons for their movement and their needs to be able to better assist them in emergencies.
  • Access to justice at local level: This AHEAD project is supported by Tawanmandi and aims to promote access to the judicial system in the Balkh province. The project’s aim is to increase access to the legal system by raising awareness especially targeting disadvantaged and marginsalised groups such as women and children. These groups are often disadvantaged in traditional justice mechanisms and unaware of alternatives.

Major donors and partners include:

  • UNDP
  • Save the Children
  • GIZ
  • Welthungerhilfe
