Limpal Colombia works to advance the peaceful transformation of Colombian society and to promote and defend the human rights of women who have been affected by Colombia’s long-running armed conflict.

Limpal Colombia is the Colombian chapter of the Liga Internacional de Mujeres por la Paz y la Libertad (Women's International League for Peace and Freedom), an international NGO with national sections covering all continents. Since its establishment in 1915, LIMPAL has brought together women from around the world who are united in working for peace through non-violent means and to promoting political, economic and social justice for all.

Mission and objectives

Limpal Colombia’s work is based on the principals of dignity, freedom, peace, justice and solidarity. Its aim is to be part of a social movement committed to the construction of a just and inclusive society through the defence, promotion and deliverance of human rights that allows for the empowerment of women and the advancement of women’s rights.

Three principal objectives have guided Limpal Colombia’s work:

  • To reconstruct the ties of solidarity that have been destroyed as a result of war.
  • To strengthen processes promoting empowerment and the demanding of rights.
  • To support local economic projects that strengthen grass roots organisations, local alternative markets, and the capacity of those who work in activities forging solidarity and fair trade networks.

Context and activities

"With women at the lead we continue searching for paths towards social justice and in the defence and promotion of human rights. We are women. We work for peace and we resist war."
The common factors in the socio-economic conditions of women in the regions in which Limpal Colombia operates are poverty and discrimination.

With these women, Limpal Colombia has promoted processes of empowerment; has hosted training in the areas of human rights, women’s rights, in the practicalities of demanding one’s own rights, and in carrying out contextual analysis;has pushed forward practices of fair trade and economic justice; and has strengthened the organisation and the documenting of cases.

By 2015 Limpal Colombia will have consolidated as a social leader in the formation, promotion and defence of women’s human rights. Promoting the organisational strengthening of communities, it will promote the demanding of rights and the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence that affect women in the context of the armed conflict.
