Haqsoor was founded in 2003 to prevent conflicts in Somaliland as well as cross-border clan based conflicts.
Haqsoor strives to find creative ways to prevent conflict while working with traditional leaders and cross-sectors of society and providing opportunities for dialogue.
The organisation's focus is on transforming structural practices within Somali culture that erode human rights, provide environmental protection for sustainable economic growth, and support peace education and the facilitation of community dialogue.
One of Haqsoor’s biggest achievements has been the mobilisation of traditional leaders and elders to discuss negative aspects of Somaliland customary law. This discussion raised human rights issues such as inherited marriage and traditional methods of dealing with rape. Afterward, the leaders present agreed to sign a declaration of reform and promised to collaborate with the government and other civil society organisations to eliminate unjust practices that may lead to further human rights abuses.
