One of the earliest local initiatives for peace in the West Nile region, Participatory Rural Development Agency (PARUDA) initiated and facilitated the peace process between the Ugandan government and one of the rebel groups that formed the Uganda National Rescue Front II (UNRF II), which reached a peaceful settlement in 2001. Today it is helping to monitor the compliance and implementation of some aspects of the peace agreements.
PARUDA is also engaged in the reintegration of former UNRF II rebels into society and peace education programmes. PARUDA has also organised the West Nile Development Conference and followed up on its implementation. The organisation promotes restorative justice practices through community elders and cultural leaders.
