Last updated: April 2013

The Resource Center for Civil Leadership (RECONCILE International), is a grassroots NGO in South Sudan. The organisations aims to contribute to nation building by equipping communities with knowledge and skills for peacebuilding through trauma recovery, civic education, and advocacy. RECONCILE was established in 2003 as an affiliate Church organisation by the New Sudan Council of Churches (NSCC).

One of RECONCILE's projects includes "Inter-ethnic Exchange Learning" visits between groups who are or have experienced conflict among themselves. These visits have brought together chiefs from conflicting groups as well as women, including a trust building exchange visit between Nuer and Murle women in Jonglei state in 2010. This project has provided an opportunity for women and men to work toward reconciliation between themselves, and this helped to stem violence in their communities following a prolonged cycle of violence in 2009. Even though the violence resumed in December 2011, the relationships developed during the exchange visits have continued to promote space for dialogue. Currently women are at the forefront of the peace processes being initiated in Jonglei state.

RECONCILE has three programme areas:

  • Civic education and peacebuilding
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation
  • A training institution - the RECONCILE Peace Institute (RPI).

The RPI offers in-depth certificate courses in peace studies and conflict transformation, and community-based trauma healing. Target groups include civil and community leaders, Church leaders, young people and women leaders, as well as the general public.
