The Red Cetroamericana para la Construcción de la Paz y Seguridad Humana (Central American Network for Peacebuilding and Human Security, REDCEPAZ) was founded in 2002. It is a membership organisation with the objective of developing and consolidating a regional space to coordinate peacebuilding work, supporting democratic develop and governance.
Its objectives include:
- Developing the network's ability to support and coordinate local, national and regional security actors;
- Strengthen capacities to influence public security policies;
- Develop a social audit process for national and regional security and defence issues; and
- Create and strengthen institutional and civil society capacity.
REDCEPAZ has principally worked in preventing armed violence in border areas; evaluating the strategic security of Central America; implementing international legal instruments in the region, and developing arms control initiatives. It also conducts research and promotes learning and development work between civil society and regional authorities.
REDCEPAZ has a letter of understanding with the Secretary General of the Central American Integration System to establish a partnership in security matters.
It is also part of the Central American section of the International Action Network on Small Arms.
