Rural Women’s Network Nepal (RUWON Nepal) has worked for decades to promote social justice and the rights of women, young people and children in Nepal. RUWON supports women from excluded and marginalised communities in disadvantaged regions so as to achieve sustainable and equitable development through peace, social inclusion, advocacy and empowerment.

A demonstration against domestic violence

As well as their work on gender equality, RUWON works for the rights of children and young people in Nepal. Through awareness and capacity building, and by creating forums for discussion, it encourages young people to be an active part of the development of the country.

Sustainable peace and democracy are central parts of RUWON programs. The organisation strives to work in an environmentally sensitive manner in all its activities.

Examples of work

Gender equality, peace and micro-savings

RUWON campaigns actively in schools and colleges to promote gender equality. Activities include forming youth clubs, training on peace, gender and gender equality, publication of a monthly magazine, training on micro-finance and other extra activities to give continuation of the club. Clubs have been formed not only by students within schools RUWON works directly with, but has spread to students of different schools. The initiative incorporates ten schools and five colleges of the Kathmandu valley.

Campaign against domestic violence: peace begins from home

RUWON launched a campaign against domestic violence and provides immediate support to the survivors of violence. The immediate support includes providing legal assistance, shelter and food. The organisation also runs a free "Domestic Violence Hotline" service that connects survivors to the concerned government services such as police, lawyers and hospitals.
