Saiban began as a community-based organisation in 2002 in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. Saiban aims to improve the living conditions of local communities by reducing their vulnerabilities and facilitating their access to social justice. Saiban focuses on peace, capacity building of grassroots institutions, empowerment of women and human rights.
Saiban is working to build peace in the community through strengthening public-private partnerships in the region, raising awareness about the importance of peace, holding dialogue among stakeholders, sensitising media on the importance of peace, and involving young people in peacebuilding initiatives.
Activities
Peace Development Project
Saiban started 'Peace Development Project'' in 2009 in Hazara Division of Province Pukhtoonkhwa, with the aim of constituting District and Divisional Level Peace Dialogues and Forums for raising awareness about Peace; to develop harmony among people of diverse cultures and religions; and to mobilise young people for building peace in their communities. So far, four District Level Forums, one Divisional Level Peace Forum and a Peace Development Forum of Young people have been established by Saiban for prompting peace in the community through involvement of young people, journalists, lawyers, elected and religious representatives of community, teachers, and farmers. To raise awareness about peace among young people and to promote peace activism among young people Saiban conducted five Debate Competitions in 2009 among young people of Colleges in Hazara Division.
Humanitarian support
Being a local organisation with strong roots in the communities and a team of dedicated volunteers, Saiban played an active role in 2005 and 2006 in providing humanitarian support to the people in earthquake-affected areas of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, and provided shelters to severely affected communities located at high altitudes. Similarly in 2009, Saiban actively responded to the needs of Internally Displaced People in terrorism affected areas. Saiban is also working in the areas of rural development, advocacy, human rights protection, and the empowerment of women.
