Sanaa 1

Sanaa Art Promotions (SAP) was founded by artists and social scientists to accelerate community social development. It works on peaceably resolving land and political disputes between communities. Established in 1985, SAP uses performing and visual arts in its interventions, using its Participatory Interactive Media Model. Its main areas of work include governance and constitutionalism, health (particularly HIV/Aids and drugs concerns), children's education and gender issues.

Sanaa uses art to help communicate, encourage dialogue and help learning. With such interactive work, participants feel a sense of community and take ownership of spreading what they have learned. Sanaa has so far trained almost 850 youth groups who have gone on to undertake peacebuilding work in their communities, forming peace networks which traverse tribe and clan. Local communities have embraced dialogue, arbitrating disputes between themselves and creating peace committees to discuss potentially conflicting issues. Schools in the area have also formed peace clubs, creating a culture of peaceful dispute resolution for children to grow up and use as a catalyst for Kenyan development. This has been especially in evidence among young people in Kenya's coastal region, where tension and violence has often been in evidence during elections.
