Adelante Foundation works with poor communities in Honduras to lift them out of poverty.
Last updated: يناير 2018

Adelante is an organisation working in Honduras that believes in the power of opportunity. Their work is based on the assumption that Hondurans living in poverty have the talent, the ingenuity and the strength to transform their lives and their nation. All they require is a little capital to be able to start.

The organisation grew in the aftermath of the most detrimental hurricane that hit the Caribbean in the last century, Hurricane Mitch, which tore apart Honduras in the fall of 1998. The country's poor infrastructure was in a state of collapse. Following research on sustainable poverty alleviation, the idea of microfinance was created.

The organisation was convinced that loaning money rather than giving it away was the key to rebuilding Honduras and was determined to make it happen. It was committed to working in rural areas with the poorest communities and working with marginalised women. With the support from venture capitalist and philanthropist Ed Cohen, the foundation was born. The Spanish word for 'forward' is Adelante, the name encompassed the efforts to move out of poverty.
