Democracy Sierra Leone (DSL) is a coalition of over forty civil society organisations which works towards expanding democratic values including respect for human rights, public accountability, and the rule of law.

Democracy Sierra Leone (DSL) is a coalition of over forty civil society organisations which works towards expanding democratic values including respect for human rights, public accountability, and the rule of law. It also works to build the capacity of youth and women as part of a governance programme.

Achievements

The organisation has achieved a variety of success:

  • Setting up coalition of 64 civil society organizations.
  • Training of Trainers (TOT) programme which involves the training of 100 participants on conflict prevention across the country.
  • Training of stakeholders at constituency and districts level on conflict prevention.
  • Developed and produced a Hotspot Map in the lead up to the 2007 General Elections.
  • Consultative forum meetings.
  • Organised the first Presidential and Vice Presidential debates at Lagoonda and Miatta Conference Hall respectively.
  • Violence Free Campaign during and after elections.
  • Observing Presidential and Parliamentary elections 2007.
  • Expectation Survey carried out on Sierra Leoneans' immediate needs after the 2007 elections.
  • Trained over 2000 youth since 2009 in business, professional development and IT.
  • Trained staff of London Mining on Professional Development.
  • Worked with FAO to train youth around the country on leadership.
  • Developed numerous training manuals for different sets of programmes.
  • During the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, DSL received funding from the U.S. Embassy and trained 100 volunteers to engage in social mobilisation in 5 districts to help educate the people of Sierra Leone.
