The Human Rights Education Institute of Burma (HREIB) facilitates a broad range of human rights training and advocacy programmes for grassroots organisations and community leaders. HREIB is dedicated to building a peaceful, democratic and just society where the people of Burma understand their human rights and enjoy political and social freedoms.

HREIB was founded in 2000 with the goal of building a network of human rights trainers and advocates in Burma. Since then the organisation has trained over 250 people including women, university students, young monks and pastors, activists and school teachers. The network has been instrumental in responding to human rights emergencies in Burma over the last 10 years. Recent accomplishments include:

  • Providing support to the monks during the 2007 Saffron Revolution;
  • Promoting and protecting child rights in the aftermath of cyclone Nargis;
  • Transforming community gender dynamics; and
  • Contributing to policy changes for Burmese migrant workers in Thailand.

HREIB also produces human rights training manuals and resource materials, which are developed in consultation with local trainers and community organisers. These materials focus on various human rights issues including land confiscation, domestic violence, child trafficking, health rights, the environment and democratic leadership. The manuals contain practical modules that can be used by community organisers who have no prior facilitation experience. HREIB has also developed audio/visual resource materials for human rights educators and other human rights advocates.
