Human Development Concern for Horn of Africa (HUDA) was founded in 2004 and is based in United Kingdom. HUDA works with the vision that every human deserves the right to a peaceful, dignified and healthy way of life, and that working together to assist and help people to stand on their own feet is the best way to create long-lasting solutions to the cycles that trap generations in poverty.

Main projects

Humanitarian Relief

Conflicts and natural disasters such as droughts and floods have affected large numbers of people living in the Horn of Africa, creating hardship and suffering. HUDA believes that intervention in emergency situations must be rapid, direct and well-structured in order to be successful. The organisation also recognises that once the immediate danger is over development programmes to rebuild the lives of the people must start without delay.

Water and sanitation

The majority of the Horn of Africa is semi-arid. Water is a precious and very important element in the country. People in this region are either classified as pastoralists or agro-pastoralists; both are highly dependent on the availability of water. Clean water is vital for the health and the well-being of the people and animals in this region. One of HUDA’s main operations is to provide water for communities often affected by drought.

Education

HUDA has established preschools to help eradicate illiteracy and enhance education, an important milestone for human development and creativity. They have also trained local communities with the skills to run the schools themselves, generating new capacity and innovative ways to contribute, as part of their commitment to cooperate and give help so that people can stand on their own. HUDA provides financial and material support to locally run schools, such as Alnur Orphans’ elementary and secondary school in the Galdogob district of the Mudug region of Somalia.

Major achievements

  • Since the start of the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa, HUDA has focused on delivering urgent humanitarian packages to the worst affected areas, in particular the Bay, Bakol, Gedo and Jubba regions which are far away from humanitarian aid zones.
  • HUDA has organised and implemented two water wells in Kismayo, Lower Jubba region.
  • HUDA has distributed water to 250 families in remote villages outside the reach of international humanitarian aid.
