The Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen (Museum of Words and Images, MUPI) is a museum dedicated to historical memory in El Salvador. MUPI aims to contribute to cultural and educational development of the country, creating a space for reflection on problems in Salvadoran society. It was founded by Carlos Henríquez Consalvi 'Santiago', who ran the Radio Venceremos radio station during the Salvadoran civil war.

The Museum aims to:

  • Rescue and preserve archival and documentary collections
  • Support the participation of communities, researchers, artists and society in general in examining Salvador history and society
  • Support and accompany indigenous communities in documenting their local memories and producing relevant cultural artefacts
  • Create and disseminate publications, forums and exhibitions dedicated to generation knowledge, debate and citizen participation
  • Promote research on culture and historical memory in El Salvador

The Museum has held a wide range of exhibitions related to human rights, peacebuilding work and the history of the Salvadoran civil war, and also runs a 'Culture of Peace' programme which includes publications, exhibitions, training and workshops on peacebuilding-related activities.

In particular, in addition to its work on memory and identity, its develops arts and culture workshops with young people from across El Salvador through this programme.
