Last updated: أغسطس 2016

Usalama Reforms Forum is a campaign and voluntary coordination space for organizations and institutions interested in community safety, security and accountable policing in Kenya. Usalama designs and implements integrated models on community safety, which incorporate prevention of crime and violence, strengthening capacities of policing institutions and promoting integrated access to justice at the community

The main focus of Usalama is getting citizens voice actively involved in improving their safety and security situationin Kenya. The citizen role in security and violence prevention frames Public Safety as a development agenda for the community.

There are three major themes to the organisations work:

  • Implement Police reforms process while enhancing Accountable Justice System by cooperating with other stakeholders: Usalama see a citizen based and service oriented policing that is as essential in promoting human rights, rights of victims and allowing every person to live their lives without constraints, not least to control crime and violence
  • Information management and technological development of Security and Policing, Public Safety and Alternative Dispute Resolution: consolidating information on violent disorders, redefine human capacity to address crime patterns and dysfunctional security systems affecting policing and security management in Kenya.
  • Administrating Social Action and Community Management: Ensuring that social institutions are receptive to citizens’ requirements, by which safety and resilience can be achieved within the communities

Usalama Reforms Forum works closely with policymakers to determine priorities for the Kenyan Police Reforms and contributed to the legislation of both the constitution and Comprehensive Police Reforms  in Kenya. Thereby, Usalama Reforms Forum became a partner to (amongst others) National Police Service (NPS), Independent Policing Authority (IPOA), National Police Service Commission (NPSC), National Government and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) among other partners.
