We Are Women Activists (WAWA) is a non-political, non-profit, non-governmental network for women organisations in Puntland (South Central Somalia) and Erigaabo (Somaliland). It was established in Bosaso (Puntland) in March 2000, by 15 women groups that were formerly part of Bari Women’s Confederation (BWC). Currently, the WAWA network includes 46 women groups.

The network was set up in order to enhance women’s rights and to promote development in Somalia. In particular, it focuses on empowering women, encouraging their political participation and involving them in decision making processes.

The network’s activities include: monitoring, investigation, documentation and advocacy for victims of human rights abuse and violations; awareness, prevention and support initiatives on HIV/AIDS; youth empowerment projects, particularly youth participation in local governance and promotion of girl leadership skills; peacebuilding and reconciliation; formal and non-formal education; capacity building for member organisations.

Supported by CARE International, WAWA developed the Xoojinta Nabada (Strengthening Peace) Project. They held a peace forum and organised meetings in five villages in the Bo’ame district (Sool region) with women peace committees, men and youth groups. During the forum topics such conflict mediation, conflict resolution and peace building were discussed, in order to promote dialogue on these issues, raise awareness, and strengthen the collaboration among the groups.
