Association pour l’Enseignement Coranique et la protection des Enfants Mouhadjirine (AECPEM)

The Association pour l’Enseignement Coranique et la protection des Enfants Mouhadjirine fights ignorance and teaches respect for human dignity through the Koran’s teachings.

The objective of the Association pour l’Enseignement Coranique et la protection des Enfants Mouhadjirine (Association for Koranic education and the protection of Mouhadjirine children) is to show to parents that sending a child to Koranic school is not inherently wrong. The aim is to fight against ignorance and teach children respect for human dignity through the Koran’s teachings. Abuse, torture and exploitation of children are severely condemned by Islam. AECPEM's mission is to contribute to the eradication of all forms of discrimination, torture, exploitation of children in general but particularly Mouhadjirine children. AECPEM wishes to see all Koranic schools remodelled to fit today’s world and rely on textbooks to teach peaceful cohabitation, respect for human dignity and living together. It aspires to a society based on equality and equity in which women fully exercise their citizenship.

AECEPEM

Objectives:

  • Improve young people’s capacity to facilitate positive collaboration within their different religious groups in their communities.
  • Establish regional “youth for peace” clubs.
  • Establish regional Local Committees for the Prevention of Conflict and for a Culture of Peace (FR: Comités Locaux pour la Prévention des conflits et la culture de la Paix).
  • Involve all potential actors in the work against extremism.
It is with these objectives in mind that AECPEM participated in international training in Italy and Senegal for the prevention and the resolution of conflicts, about social street workers and about children’s right in the labour market. AECEPEM also produced a report on the issues faced by Mouhadjirine children in the 1st and 5th Arrondissement.

From 2013 to 2014 AECPEM ran a project called “training Koranic leaders on children’s rights and national and international law” financed by the French Embassy. The overall objective of the project was the improvement of the quality of teaching in Koranic schools in Chad, to equip teachers with modern techniques, and to reinforce the capacity of Koranic teachers to fight against violent extremism and negative effects of the religious milieu. This project led to the establishment of rules of procedure in Koranic schools in Chad. The continuation of the project will be financed by the French Embassy.
