Founded in 2000, the mission of Earth Charter International is to participate actively and systematically in a transition towards sustainable ways of living, based on an ethical framework which takes care of community life, ecological integrity, universal human rights, respect for diversity, economic justice, democracy and a culture of peace.

The Secretariat of Earth Charter International and its Education Centre focus on its vision and search for the common good and ethical decision making. Much of its work involves providing basic services such as website management and preparing resources. It works to disseminate information and facilitate meetings and seminars, either virtual or physical. It also aims to bring its worth to school and educational settings.

The organisation's main areas of work are:

  • Network facilitation
  • Education and capacity building
  • Dialogue: building synergies
In 2016, Earth Charter International is focusing on promoting a culture of tolerance, no-violence and peace. It aims to establish recognition that peace is what is created in relations between people, cultures and the earth.
