Improvement in Respect to the Social Status of the Disabled (IRSD) is a registered NGO with the Nigeria Corporate Affairs Commission. It was established in 2001 by Micah Shabi - a blind man who holds a Masters Degree in Theory and Practice of Human Rights - to cater for the needs of disabled people in the State of Kaduna, Nigeria.

The mandate of the IRSD is in resonance with the United Nations Resolution of December 9th 1975 which states that: People with disabilities have the right to medical, physical and functional treatment, including education, vocational training and placement. People with disabilities have the right to economic, political and social security.

Membership for the IRSD association is open to anyone who has love and compassion for people living with a disability. It is IRSD's belief that "together we can make a difference".

IRSD's main objective is to create an adequate environment for disabled people, enabling them to live in peace. IRSD utilises different tools such as electronic media, workshops, seminars and symposiums in conjunction with the Ministry of Women Affairs an the Office of Her Excellency - the First Lady of Kaduna State reached out to wider groups in the community to create awareness on the issues of peace. In addition, IRSD visits disabled people in schools for encouragement but also to raise awareness for peace.

Major Achievements

• Raising awareness and public enlightenment on issues that border on peace and human rights for people with disabilities in Kaduna.
• Disabled people are at the receiving end of violent conflicts in our communities; this reality motivated IRSD to launch programmes relevant to advocacy, raising awareness as well as conflict management and peacebuilding for major stakeholders in Kaduna state.
