Kumi Human Rights Initiative was established in 2000 with a mission to ensure, strengthen and promote the observance of human rights democracy, the rule of law and peaceful co-existence.

The organisation conducts human rights education and awareness, advocacy and campaigns on policy issues by holding dialogues and community meetings. The themes covered are democratisation, good governance and the rule of law, and are enhanced by carrying out civic education.

Kumi Human Rights Initiative is involved in election monitoring, encouraging electorates to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders, and advocating for participation and access to justice by all. It also conducts capacity building in various aspects of programming as well as social and economic justice and access.

The organisation's peacebuilding activities include the use of dispute resolution methods including mediation and negotiation, arbitration, and counselling.

It is also a member of several coalitions; The Teso Anti Corruption Coalition, HURINET, Coalition Against Torture, Northern Uganda Transitional Justice Working Group, Coalition of African Court, and Uganda coalition on the International Criminal Court, among others.
