Established in 2014, Novi Ritm Public Union works with a vision of a democratic society where young people work together to create an equal, just, and sustainable world.
The organisation seeks to establish social meeting places for young people, and to encourage them to develop their own ideas and initiatives. By working with people from different backgrounds, the organisation hopes to build an inclusive and vibrant civil society. It aims to give young people the tools and possibilities to critically analyse and identify issues that matter to them and people in their surroundings. By empowering them, and by encouraging their social engagement, Novi Ritm hopes to change the structures in society that underpin inequalities and injustices that are holding back an inclusive, equal and sustainable world.
It is Novi Ritm's hope that what people learn within the organisation, through personal development or in workshops, will spread in society through outreach to schools, youth groups or others.
In 2015, the organisation initiated a "Say Stop to Street Harassment" project, supported by Saferworld, as part of thier community policing work. The campaign was driven by young volunteers who met regularly to discuss ideas and initiatives to raise awareness of the issue and challenge perceptions. The campaign took a number of approaches including information distribution, workshops, and raising awareness through the media.
A series of workshops was organised for youths within the community on a variety of topics including self-defence for girls, expressing their concerns through writing, video production, and on the law around street harassment. Young men and women worked together to film short videos broadcast on local television and to produce comics which were printed after the workshop, bringing them together in a safe space to discuss the issue.
The organisation's office, named "Our House", in central Osh City, functions as a platform where young people from the city and the surrounding rural areas have the possibility to come to discuss their ideas, get informed and develop their knowledge, and participate in various social activities. By listening to young people and their ideas, giving them responsibility to cultivate and conduct their ideas, while supporting in different ways, our participants develop their leadership skills at the same time as they learn more about the subject.
Novi Ritm's partners include: Centralasiengrupperna (Central Asia Groups- CAG), Sweden; UN Women; Peace Corps; Generations for Peace; SaferWorld.
