In 2002, a group of people connected to the Chirezi Foundation had a dream. Understanding the importance of education to building a peaceful DR Congo, they founded the Farm of Hope School, which now provides free education to more than 600 children in Kiliba. However, it became clear that although this will be a vital help, there was still a need for help for the children after finishing school. From this realisation came the idea for the Pan-African Peace University.

The Pan-African Peace University, which began in October 2010 in Uvira and Bukavu, South Kivu, will provide accessible university education for all, including orphans and children from poor families, thus opening the chance for them to hold leadership positions and help shape Africa's destiny.

An important aspect of the University is that from the start it is hoped that people from around the world will be able to contribute to its success, and they are seeking international volunteer teachers and intellectuals to assist with the education programme.

The Pan-African University will be a unique model of a University of Peace because it will work to build peace by those same people who have been victims of war and conflict. Yesterday’s victims will build the future. The University will seek to ensure that students are engaged with the development and peacebuilding needs of their communities. There will be volunteer groups for different issues. Because the students will receive their tuition for free, they will then be asked to in turn teach new students.
