The University for Peace was established in 1980 by UN Resolution 35/55, with the objective of providing an international institution for higher education for peace in order to promote understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence between human beings.

Towards that end, the University contributes to this task by providing education for peace through teaching, research and dissemination of fundamental knowledge for the development of human society, through interdisciplinary study of issues related to conflict and peace. Through three departments, UPeace has several master's and a doctoral programme.
