SOS-Civisme promotes solidarity in Niger based on the values ​​of good governance, democracy, civic culture, equity and dialogue for peace and sustainable development.

SOS-Civisme works toward the emergence of responsible citizenship, the development of spaces for popular participation, the promotion of equality and the strengthening of the process of democratisation at the local, national and supranational level. The organisation works in a number of countires in West Africa, including Niger.

SOS-Civisme / Niger's vision is to promote solidarity in Niger based on the values of good governance, democracy, civic culture, equity and dialogue for peace and sustainable development.

The organisation's mission is to contribute to building responsible citizenship at the national and local levels by:

  • Strengthening a sense of public service and general interest;
  • Strengthening the accountability of government and public actors to citizens;
  • Strengthening citizens' civic spirit and citizen control of public action;
  • Consolidating democracy, peace and stability.

Activities

In order to achieve its objectives, SOS-Civisme / Niger intervenes in the following areas:

  • Citizenship education, as well as education in democracy and good governance;
  • Decentralization and local development;
  • Civil society and citizen control of public action;
  • Women, youth and sustainable development;
  • Multi-stakeholder dialogue, including inter-religious dialogue, social dialogue, inter-municipal dialogue and political dialogue.

Achievements / Successes

  • In 2007, SOS-Civisme Niger carried out a project to strengthen parties' capacity for greater citizen engagement.
  • From 2008 to 2010, SOS-Civisme / Niger also implemented the Civil Society Support Program, PASOC I, in partnership with Transtec (a Belgian consultancy) with funding from the European Union.
  • In 2012, UNDP financed a peacebuilding project, entitled "Support to Youth Participation in Local Development and Decision-Making in Tchintabaraden, Tahoua Region".
  • From January 2014 to November 2015, SOS-Civisme / Niger implemented a project, entitled "Revalorisation du Vivre Ensemble" (REVE), in partnership with CARE international in Niger with funding from the European Union. The project covered the four main regions of Niger: Niamey, Maradi, Zinder and Diffa.
  • Launched in November 2015, the project Niger-Espoir (Civic Education and support for peace initiatives) is being implemented in the regions of Diffa, Maradi, Zinder and Niamey. This project is an initiative of SOS-Civisme / Niger in partnership with CARE International as part of the support to Security and Resilience in the Region of Diffa and Migration Risk Prevention programme ("SECURISER"). This programme is being implemented with the consent of the High Authority for Peacebuilding (HACP). The 18-month project ended in April 2017.
  • On 30 December, 2015, a project entitled "Improvement of School Governance in the 4th arrondissement of Niamey" was launched. This project is funded by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) and ended in December 2017.
  • As part of the peaceful elections in 2016, SOS-Civisme / Niger carried out a project on the participation of women and young people in the electoral process in Niger. The project was carried out in the regions of Tahoua and Maradi.
