As Peace Direct Chief Executive, Dylan Mathews, puts it:
“There’s been so much talk of localisation over the past few years, as well as an emerging and vibrant discussion on how to decolonise our sector. But there is also a real risk that we conflate terms. This would be a huge mistake.”

It is vital to view localisation efforts in peacebuilding, humanitarian efforts and international development as distinct from decolonisation efforts. This means understanding exactly what these terms mean, how they influence each other, and how global actors can draw from them, to better support local leaders.
