ALARM-Rwanda is registered as a local non-governmental organisation. The organisation was founded by Rev. Celestin Musekura in 1994 with the vision of creating future Rwandan leaders to reconcile the Rwandan people and be equipped to rebuild their country. As a Christian organization, ALARM has worked mainly with Church communities in Rwanda. Also, It has developed a number of activities with or in partnership with local authorities in the country.

ALARM’s trauma healing training started in response to the Rwandan genocide, a tragedy that, the organisation believes, occurred in part because the Rwandan Church failed to maintain its voice by calling Rwandans to repentance and offering forgiveness for historical genocide and crimes against humanity. From Rwanda, the ALARM’s vision and work has expanded to the other seven countries in East and Central Africa.

The activities of ALARM separated into three main areas of interventions:

Developing leaders

Realising the destructive effect of poor leadership and how it generates structural violence and fuels violent conflicts, ALARM has contributed to peacebuilding process by equipping and training church leaders, government and civic leaders, women and youth in principles of servant leadership, good governance, mentorship, diversity appreciation and community initiatives. More than 90,000 leaders were reached out through the ALARM’s training interventions.

Reconciling relationships

In order to help wounded hearts and broken relationships to heal and reconcile ALARM equips its beneficiaries with skills in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, mediation, God’s love for all people, forgiveness and reconciliation, human rights, trauma healing and social justice.

Transforming communities

ALARM’s holistic ministry seeks to address dire social needs in the community that are a hindrance to the process of peace, reconciliation, and the development of servant leadership. Through economic empowerment, education, literacy, job creation, health education, justice and advocacy for the rights of the marginalized, and communication development, ALARM works with partners to address basic needs in the community and bring hope, healing and reconciliation to hurting communities. In 2013, 178 youth supported by the ALARM Rwanda graduated from Vocational Training Centers. Through Institute for Women of Excellency (IWE), ALARM’s girls school located in Rwamagana (Eastern Province of Rwanda), the organization has contributed to increasing the number of girls in schools.

ALARM Rwanda has partnered with  different partners including the NURC (National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, Baptist church of Rwanda (AEBR), Bible Society and the Local authorities.
