LGDH Protest

The Liga Guineense dos Direitos Humanos (Guinean League of Human Rights, LGDH) works to defend and promote human rights across Guinea-Bissau. Founded in August 1991, LDGH is a member of the International Federation of Leagues of Human Rights, the Inter African Union of Human Rights, the Forum of Human Rights NGOS in the PALOP (Lusophone Network), the National Civil Society Movement of Guinea-Bissau, and a member observer of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. Active before the democratisation of the Guinean state, the LGDH has more than 5000 activists and is continuing the drive to consolidate democracy in the country. It is one of the few organisations of Guinea Bissau civil society with representation and structures at national and international level.

The LGDH's main activities include:

  • Research and dissemination of research on human and fundamental rights issues.
  • Working with public authorities and powers on human rights issues.
  • Denouncing all attacks on fundamental rights.
  • Holding seminars, meetings and demonstrations, and participating in international forums.
  • Raising public awareness at national and international levels of human rights issues.
  • Running exchange projects with national and foreign partner organisations.
  • Providing civic education on human rights, citizenship, conflict prevention and democratic issues.

The LGDH runs three main projects, on impunity and injustice, on developing a culture of human rights and civic action, and a key standalone project, the Casa Dos Dereitos, which promotes dialogue between key sections of Guinean society.

LGDH has published the 2013 years of impunity in Guinea Bissau report. LGDH has daily action against human rights violations at national and international level
