The Student Christian Movement of the Philippines (SCMP) works to uphold students' democratic rights and welfare, and actively participates in the Filipino people's struggle for national freedom and democracy.
It is committed to the challenge of realising the transformative and liberative aspects of the Christian faith in unity and service of the oppressed, leading to the Christian student to a reawakened relevance on campus, and in the church and wider society. It is open to students regardless of faith, denomination, gender, age and class.
The SCMP was was founded on December 27, 1960, born of a National Assembly of 57 delegates representing 52 SCMP units all over the country. It is a national democratic ecumenical mass organisation of the youth and students. While it upholds the students' democratic rights and welfare, SCMP integrates and actively participates in the Filipino people's struggle for national freedom, democracy and human rights. It currently has twenty-five chapters with 800 members nationwide.
Aims
- To build social awareness among Christian youth and students.
- To immerse with, organise and mobilise Christian youth and students and involve them in people's struggles.
- To support, participate in and articulate within and outside the academic community the struggle for social change.
- To harness potentials and develop skills of the students for the service of the people’s struggle.
