HEAL Africa is a hospital in Goma DRC that has developed to provide a range of peacebuilding programmes throughout North Kivu. It is an innovative example of 'peace through health'.
Last updated: November 2017

HEAL Africa is both a hospital and a peacebuilding organisation offering support to victims of conflict in East DR Congo. They have a hospital in Goma and 64 health centres in North Kivu and Maniema provinces. Beyond the traditional role of health centres, HEAL Africa run many programmes to address the causes and longer-term social impacts of conflict. Their holistic approach includes both emergency response teams and programmes for helping communities recover from conflicts.

Their programmes include:

  • Helping the victims of rape and gender-based violence, including both medical and surgical care and psychosocial care;
  • Providing victims of conflict with basic economic support for survival;
  • Legal assistance to the victims of violence to help end impunity for crimes;
  • Micro-credit and training in income-generating activities for communities.
HEAL Africa's innovative work has attracted much international attention for being a leading Congolese-led peacebuilding organisation and for the innovative way that they have combined health and peacebuilding work. Below: Photos of HEAL Africa's work. Thanks to Nicole D'Errico.
