International Centre for Peace, Charities and Human Development (INTERCEP)

The International Centre for Peace, Charities and Human Development (INTERCEP) is a Nigerian organisation aiming at promoting freedom and human rights in a peaceful environment.

It was established in the year 2000 in Jos Plateau State. The Centre focuses on four main thematic areas: human rights, conflict management, poverty reduction and good governance. Its mission is to develop a peaceful, loving and caring society for sustainable development.

Major achievements

INTERCEP coordinated to build the Iglaba Vocational Skills Acquisition Centre in Obudu, Cross River State. The project was commissioned by the Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria His Excellency Yutaka Kikuta. The Embassy of Japan in Nigeria sponsored the Project.
INTERCEP coordinated a Nigeria Stability Reconciliation Program (NSRP) project ‘’Improving the livelihoods of Women and girls in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State through capacity building in Learning, Labour and Leadership’’. (UN Resolution 1325, National Action Plan (NAP), State Action Plan (SAP) was in focus here. As a result of the Project Wase LGA became the first LGA among the 774 LGAs in Nigeria to develop the Local Action Plan (LAP). UN Women in Plateau State has adopted it as a Model and translated same in other local languages to replicate same in other LGAs in the State.
In 2015 INTERCEP signed a Contract with the EU to implement a two year project ‘Strengthening Children and Young Peoples Protection System in North Central Nigeria’ The implementation of the project is on-going.
From 2010 to 2012, in collaboration with five other organisations, INTERCEP worked on a European Union project 'Promoting Women’s Participation in Politics and Decision Making in Plateau State'. As a result of the project there was an increased number of women who actively participated in the 2011 general elections.
In August 2009, in conjunction with the National Human Rights Commission and with the support of the UNICEF field office in Bachi, INTERCEP organised a workshop on children rights law. The workshop was delivered in 12 secondary schools in Nasarawa and Plateau States.
In 2006, in conjunction with Global Exchange Volunteers (sponsored by the British Council), INTERCEP organised a series of activities with secondary schools. The program was focused on leadership skills, human rights and peace education.
INTERCEP is member of the Plateau Peace Practitioners Network (PPPN). The Network aims at promoting peace by intervening and responding to cases of violence, trauma healing, drugs/substance abuse, mentoring, early warning mechanism. INTERCEP has worked with them in the areas of promoting peace in Plateau through capacity building and advocacy visit to various key stake holders for peaceful coexistence. INTERCEP has been in partnership with the network for the part 3 (three) years.
In 2001, in collaboration with CEPID, CBD-NGO FORUM and FOMWAN, INTERCEP organised training on conflict management in Plateau State. The project was sponsored by OTI/USAID and it contributed to build peace in the Jos Plateau, an area generally prone to conflict.

Success story

INTERCEP chairs the Secretariat of Child Protection Network. It has collaborated with the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission on various projects, such as human rights education programs and the establishment of Human Rights Clubs in several schools in Plateau and Nasarawa States.

In 23-25 January 2013 INTERCEP was part of the group working on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council. The review was organised by the Nigeria Human Rights Commission and facilitated by Amnesty International. INTERCEP played an active leadership role during the group work. In September 2013 INTERCEP was then nominated and sponsored by UPRinfo, a Geneva-based NGO, to present a report on the human rights situation in Nigeria. In the report, INTERCEP raised three main issues concerning the non-implementation of CEDAW (Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women), Child Marriage and Female genital mutilation.

It is often said that war is constructed in the hearts of men. It is also true that it is in the hearts that war can be deconstructed. The best place to start is the heart of children by teaching them about fundamental freedom and rights, to live in peace one with another. That is what INTERCEP does in the Institute for Developmental Education and Allied Studies (IDEAS). IDEAS was established in the course of implementing the Break-Through Initiative (BI) conceived by Clement Iornongu during his participation in a British Council Programme ‘TRUST THE DIFERENCE’ which held in Nigeria and the UK.
