Created in June 1993 and legally registered as a non-profit association in January 1994, MOUCECORE is a local Christian organisation which empowers and works alongside church communities in order to ensure holistic development. The organisation was founded by Bishop Alexis Birindabagabo.

MOUCECORE intervenes in the areas of healing and reconciliation, sustainable peace, community development, HIV/AIDS care and prevention, and children’s holistic development. Since October 1994, just after the genocide in Rwanda, MOUCECORE – mainly supported by Tearfund UK - the organisation has run community-level reconciliation, pro-peace and community development projects in different provinces of Rwanda.

MOUCECORE's approach to community development has three steps.

The first step consists of sensitising and mobilising church communities on the issue to deal with. The beneficiaries are involved in the project and commit themselves to play an active role.

The second step comprises all efforts made to organise Solidarity Transformation Groups (STGs) and build the needed functional capacities of STG members through training.

These groups take care of the third step, which involves interventions aimed at transforming the community. The STGs actively participate in this step: working within their own communities, the STGs uplift the most needy, help others (their neighbours) to find hope and a reason for living and build their capacities to respond to challenges they are facing. MOUCECORE facilitates carrying out community mapping, needs assessments and designing community development plans.

With this three step approach, MOUCECORE supports churches and communities to become transformation agents. Applying the approach helps to fulfil the organisation's motto of “being transformed to transform others.”

Currently, MOUCECORE implements the following projects:

  • Child holistic development: this project has the aim of protecting children and through educating them and their parents for safeguarding child rights.
  • Church and community mobilisation: aims at mobilising and building capacity for local communities for holistic transformation
  • Eradicating poverty one village at a time (EPOVAT): with the aim of eradicating poverty in 5622 households by increasing food production, environmental protection, access to financial services, water and sanitation.
  • Water hygiene and sanitation: with the aim of providing running and cleaning water to people in Nyamagabe District (South Province) and Burera District (Northern Province). In addition, the project beneficiary communities benefit from sanitation and hygiene education.
